If you are contemplating getting nose threads to enhance your nose bridge, you need to read this before proceeding any further.
Nose Thread Lifts, like K-pop and all things Korean, have exploded in popularity in recent years. So much so that every clinic on the high street seem to be touting nose thread lifts with abandon. But despite what some desperate (read: unethical) doctors may have you believe, they are not for everyone. Usually, alarm bells should go off when a clinic only offers one procedure for augmentation of the nose, as a result, they tend to oversell their one ‘star’ procedure even when it is not suitable. Having said that, when nose thread lifts are done properly on the right noses by the right hands, the results can be beautiful. So it is imperative that you do your homework before jumping on the bandwagon.

“If you have a very flat nose bridge and wide nostrils, then surgical rhinoplasty may be a good option to address both issues concurrently and safely once and for all”
MYTH: NOSE THREADLIFTS ARE BETTER THAN RHINOPLASTY
TRUTH: For those who want a definitive elevation of height as well as a reduction of their alar base (nostril size), surgical rhinoplasty remains the gold standard. Any doctor who tells you otherwise is only out to loosen your purse-strings without a thought of the final outcome (Most likely, their clinic does not offer rhinoplasty). The downside of surgical rhinoplasty is the longer downtime which has to be carefully balanced against the greater height your nose bridge can possibly achieve, as well as the permanence of the final outcome. Second point: nose thread lifts cannot reduce the width of your nostrils. “If you have a very flat nose bridge and wide nostrils, then surgical rhinoplasty may be a good option to address both issues concurrently and safely once and for all” says Dr Tan Ying Chien, consultant plastic surgeon at SW1 Clinic Plastic Surgery Centre.

MYTH: NOSE THREAD LIFTS ARE WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS
TRUTH: All aesthetic procedures are associated with side effects. The doctor who claims he or she has never seen a side effect has probably not done enough procedures to begin with. The most common side effects with Nose Thread Lifts are: (1) bruising (2) hyperpigmentation of the needle insertion point due to poor healing of the skin (3) crooked nose due to improper insertion of nose threads (4) poor height due to insufficient threads (5) pain or palpable thread ends due to kinking and unkinking of the nose threads due to poor technique. “I have corrected a few cases of crooked noses from thread lifts by using fillers to balance out residual asymmetry and thus give the impression of a straighter nose” advises Dr Chua Han Boon. “However, the most important element is proper examination and judicious marking of the nose”

MYTH: NOSE THREAD LIFTS ARE BETTER THAN FILLERS
TRUTH: Both Thread lifts and fillers for the nose can give aesthetically pleasing results in different noses. Depending on what your needs are and the type of nose you have, both treatment options should be available to you, and should be considered by you and your doctor. Some noses may benefit from a combination of both techniques to achieve an overall aesthetically complete result. Furthermore, Nose Fillers derived from hyaluronic acid can be dissolved away almost instantaneously. Nose Threads, while 100% bio-absorbable, may take months before they dissolve; if you need to remove them immediately, the only way is surgical removal. “I have removed a few cases of nose threads before surgical rhinoplasty. Sometimes the threads are still there even after 6 months!” comments Dr Tan Ying Chien.
